Everyone loves free content! Here are 6 free updates and open betas to play in the month of April.
The Division – 1.1 Incursions Update (April 12th)
Ubisoft is set to bring its hardest challenge yet to The Division. Incursions look to be the ultimate end-game experience for The Division. With stronger enemies, rare and powerful loot, and the implementation of a minimum Gear Score, this will be the hardest activity Division players have seen.
The 1.1 update also adds a ton of new changes to The Division. Gear Sets will be added, trading will now be allowed between group members, assignments, supply drops, new high-end items and more will all be changing the gameplay experience. Check out the full list here.
Destiny – April Update (April 12th)
Bungie has been getting a lot of criticism during Year-2 for not releasing a DLC plan. The April Update is the first real content add-on since the launch of The Taken King back in September. The biggest changes are the increased Light Level to 335 and the new additions to Prison of Elders. Along with new guns, armor, crucible balancing, quests, strike and raid updates, and more. There may not be a new raid, but Bungie is hoping this will satisfy gamers until we’re a little closer to the Fall expansion. DOOM – Open Beta (April 15th-17th)
If you haven’t yet, check out my DOOM Closed Beta Preview. I absolutely enjoyed my short lived 3-day experience with the closed beta. DOOM is one of those shooters that simply isn’t like the rest. Most shooters nowadays seem to be trying to fit a particular mold, DOOM breaks that mold in every sense of the way. With 2 maps, 2 modes, 1 demon, and a handful of crazy weapons, you’ll definitely be left wanting more once the beta concludes.
Gears of War 4 – Beta (April 18th – May 1st)
The highly anticipated Gears of War 4 Multiplayer beta begins April 18th for Ultimate Edition owners. Marking the first entry by the newly formed The Coalition, will they be able to revive the franchise to its former glory? Will wall bouncing shotguns still be the dominant strategy (I hope so), or will they change it to the cover shooter Cliffy B. always wanted it to be? We’ll all have to wait and find out when the beta drops later this month!
Rocket League – April Update (TBA)
Along with a few smaller tweaks and additions, Rocket League is adding a brand new mode: Hoops. A new “basketball-inspired game mode”, Hoops pits players in a 2v2 match in a new arena titled Dunk House. The mode will be available in Exhibition, Private Match or the new Casual Playlist. If the Winter update that added a hockey mode is anything to go by, don’t expect the Hoops mode to be a minor change in aesthetics!
Battleborn – Open Beta (PS4: April 8th, XB1: April 13th)
The new genre of “Hero Shooter” has been dubbed to describe a slew of new upcoming releases. Games like Paladin, Paragon, Gigantic, Lawbreakers, and more have emerged as prime examples. With Battleborn, players choose from up to 25 heroes to duke it out in Co-op or competitive modes. The open beta will include all 25 heroes, 2 story mode episodes that can be played with up to five players, and 2 competitive modes.
Which of these free updates and betas will you be playing in April? I’m personally most excited for the Gears of War 4 beta and The Division update. Share your thoughts in the comments below!
